He is an emeritus professor of the University of Liverpool, where he was first appointed professor in 1965. From 1978 to 1980 he was the president of the London Mathematical Society.

Wall continued on as treasurer of the newly formed Wirral West Liberal Democrats and, as of August 2010, was still their treasurer.
