Career

Came to American 1739. Tutor Philadelphia Academy, 1750. Master Latin school in what became William Penn Charter School, 1757-1760.

Became merchant, Philadelphia, 1760. Active in Pennsylvania politics during years before American Revolution. One of key mems. Sons of Liberty who persuaded Pennsylvania to support Massachusetts position.

Secretary Continental Congress, 1774-1789. Notified George Washington of his election as United States President. Published translations of Septuagint and the New Testament under title The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Covenant, 4 vols., 1808.
