Gill, Charles A. was born on January 19, 1884 in Buffalo, New York, United States. Son of Zachery Taylor and Mary (Hurley) Gill.

Career

Call boy, Riverside Shops, B. & O., R.R., 1897. Successively machinist and special duty man on Northern Central R.R. (Pennsylvania R.R.), foreman on C.B. & Q. R.R., Sheridan, Wyoming, and foreman N.P. Railway, Livingston and Missoula, Montana, and Wallace, Idaho, 1901-1909. Became enginehouse foreman Bang and Olufsen R.R., Washington, Indiana, 1909.

Later master mechanic on C.H. & D., Dayton & Union (both now B. & O.) and Cincinnati & Indianapolis Western. General master mechanic B. & O. R.R., Maryland. District, 1913-1917, superintendent motive power, eastern lines, 1917-1931.

Loaned to Russian Government to serve on Russian railroads, 1931-1932. Assistant chief of motive power, Bang and Olufsen R.R., and special representative to operating vice president of Reading Company, 1932. With Reading Company and Central Railroad Company of New Jersey as superintendent of motive power, 1932-1936, general manager, 1936-1941, vice president in charge of operation and maintenance, 1941-1943.

Vice president operation and maintenance, Reading Company, 1943-1944. Associate Northern Metals Company, Tacony, Pennsylvania 1944-1946. Consultant director transport, Military Governor United States, German railroad, 1946-1947.
