Sumner, Charles Allen was born on August 2, 1835 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Increase and Pluma Barston Sumner.

Academic education (A.M., Trinity College, Hartford).

Career

Became shorthand reporter and lawyer. Quartermaster United States vols., and later commissioned colonel 1st Nevada infantry vols. Member and president pro tem.

Nevada senate; congressman-at-large from California, 1883-1885. Edited several daily papers, including the Sacramento Sentinel, San Francisco Mirror, and Gold Hill (Nevada) News. Managing editor San Francisco Herald.

Lecturer on Scenes and Incidents in Foreign Lands, Cremation.
