Studied at Grammar School, Musselburgh, near Edinburgh. Scottish Naval and Military Academy, Edinburgh.
Served in India, 1856-1894. Employed with the force in pursuit of Koor Sing and the Ramghur rebels on the banks of the Soane River, August and September 1857. Present under a heavy fire at the outlying piquet of the Alumbagh, December 1857.
Belonged to Sir James Outram’s Field Force before Lucknow November 1857 to March 1858.
Present at capture ot Lucknow. Actions at Kanta, Oudh, 1 February 1858, at Bargadwali, Dumereagunge, Bansi, Chittrah, Pokhurbitua, Biskolnir, et cetera, 185S, when forming part of the Rohilkund Field Force under General Rowcroft.
Served with the Central Indian Field Force under General Whitlock, and engaged in many expeditions. Deputy Inspector-General of Police, 1882-1887.
