Chairman Eastern State Hospital Commission, 1907-1911.

Chairman Democratic State Executive Committee, 1912-1914. United States marshal, Western District of North Carolina, by appointment President Wilson, 1914-1922.

President Asheville Citizen-Times Company, publishers of Asheville Citizen and Asheville Times. Director and president Asheville Colored Hospital.

A pioneer in promotion of apple industry in Western North Carolina and owner of one of largest orchards in the state.
