Joined Devonshire Regiment, 1890. Served in Burmah campaign (medal and clasp), 18S9-92. Appointed Superintendent of Gymnasia, Malta, 1894.
Served in Tirah campaign, 1897 (medal and 2 clasps).
Held appointments of Railway Transport Officer, Punjaub, and Station Staff-Officer, Mian Mir, 1898-1899. Served in South African campaign, 1899-1902 (Queen's medal and 6 clasps.
King’s medal and 2 clasps. Despatches 3 times); 2nd in Command of Imperial Light Infantry, South Africa, 1900-1901.

Graduated at the Staff College, 1903-1904. Brigade Major of 7tli Infantry Brigade, Southern Command, 1905-1907. Appointed to General Staff at Army Headquarters, 1907.
