Private, corporal and sergeant Company G, 31st Ohio Infantry, August 20, 1861-February 3, 1864. First lieutenant, February 3, 1864. Captain, October 26, 1864, honorary mustered out of volunteer service, July 20, 1865.

Captain 41st United States Infantry, July 28, 1866. Transferred to 24th Infantry, November 11, 1869. Major 7th Infantry, July 4, 1892.

Lieutenant colonel, 19th Infantry, January 28, 1897. Colonel 16th Infantry, May 5, 1899. Brigadier general United States of America, October 18, 1902.

Retired at own request, after 40 years’ service, November 25, 1902. Wounded in skirmish with Roddy’s Cavalry, April, 1863, and at battle of Chickamauga, September 20, 1863.
