Appointed Lieutenant Uitenhage Hottentot Levy during Kafir War, 1846-1847. Lieutenant 1st Division Kafir Police, 1848-1850. Captain-Commander Albany Hottentot Levy during Kafir War, 1851-1852 (medal, and several times mentioned in general orders).
Commandant 2nd Division of Armed Mounted Police, 1852-1855.
And Inspector thereof, 1855-1857. 2nd in command during operations 1857-1858 against the chiefs Fadana and Kreli.
And Civil Commissioner and Resident Magistrate for Albert district, 1858-1859. Foreign Queenstown, 1859-1868.
To Graham’s Town, 1868-1869.
And to King William’s Town, 1869-1871, was Government’s Agent and Chief Magistrate for territory of British Basutoland, 1871-1877. Appointed 1877, Commandant of Frontier Armed Mounted Police, and with rank of Colonel in His (or Her) Majesty’s Army to command of Imperial and Colonial Troops on east side of Kei River. Was CommanderGeneral of Colonial Forces from January 1878 to end of Galeka War and Gaika rebellion (clasp for South Africa and thanked by both Houses of Parliament), and Government’s Agent in and Chief Magistrate for British Basutoland.
