CALLWELL, Charles Edward was born in 1859 in London. Son of Heury Callwell of Lismoyne, Company Antrim, and Maud, daughter of James Martin of Ross, Company Galway.
Studied at Haileybury College. Royal Military Academy.
Joined the Royal Artillery, 1878. Passed Staff College, 18S6. Colonel, 1904; has held appointments of Staff Captain, Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant-General, Deputy - Assistant - Quarter master-General, and Colonel of General Stall at Headquarters, and of Brigade Major.
Served Afghan War, 1880 (medal).
Boer War, 1881.
South African War, 1899-1902, actions of Vaal Krantz, Pieters Hill, Relief of Ladysmith, Laing’s Nek, and Bergendal, commanded a mobile column in 1901-1902 (two medals, eight clasps, despatches twice, brevet of lieutenant-colonel). Was with Greek forces in Turko-Greek war, 1887.
