PITMAN, Charles Edward was born on May 14, 1845 in Plymouth. Son of late Captain J. C. Pitman, Royal Navy, Hillside, Guildford, and Elizabeth Manley, daughter of late Sir Humphrey Senhouse, Royal Navy, Knight of Hanover, Companion of the Bath.
Studied at Royal Naval School.
Joined Indian Tel. Department 16 January 1868. Lushai Expedition, 1871-1872 (despatches, medal and clasp). Mission to Khelat, 1876.
Employed in Baluchistan, 1877-1878. Afghan War, 1878-S0; Kandahar (despatches, medal, Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire), 1885-1886. Siamese Frontier, 1890.
Director (Offg.)of Construction. Operations on Punjab Frontier, 1897-1898. Defence of Malakand and operations in Swat (despatches).
