Vawter, Charles Erastus was born on June 9, 1841 in Monroe Company, West Virginia, United States. Son of John H. V. (who was 24 years member Virginia legislature).

Education

Entered Emory and Henry College, 1858, left in junior year, serving in Confederate army, 1861-1865. in Stonewall Brigade, became captain. Prisoner at Fort Delaware, March-June 1865. Re-entered Emory and Henry College.

Graduate, 1866; special course mathematics, University of Virginia.
