Editor New York Citizen, 1864. Brevetted lieutenant colonel 47th Regiment, New York Volunteers, 1864, helped prepare 1st order for enlistment of Negro regiment.

Colonel, brigadier general, 1865.

Wrote lyric “Tear down the flaunting lie! Half mast the starry flag” (often attributed to Horace Greeley).
