Brevet Colonel 1904; served Afghan War, 1878-1880. Present at battle of Ahmad Khel and action of Arzu, march from Kabul to the relief of Kandahar and battle of Kandahar (medal with 2 clasps and bronze star). Aitchakzai Expedition and operations against the Marri tribe, 1880.
Served as a Brigade Major in Black Mountain Expedition of 1888 (despatches, medal with clasp). Received commendations of Government of India and of Commander-in-Chief for the surprise of village of Maizar, Tochi Valley, North-west Frontier, India, 1900. Operations in Somaliland, 1903-1904.
Was Brigadier-General commanding 2nd Brigade, action at Jidballi (despatches twice, Companion of the Bath, medal and 2 clasps). Major-General 1907. Commanding Brigade in India.
