Admitted to Bar, 1868. Practised until 1894, when met with severe railroad accident that left him on his back for 14 months. Since recovery abandoned the Law, and devoted to Literature and Artist
Recognised as first Art Critic and Expert in Historical Portraiture in America.
Was Chief Commissioner on Retrospective Art at World’s Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893. Exposed frauds in so-called portraits of celebrities.
Has made the wrork of Gilbert Stuart, America’s master painter, a special study. Member of twenty learned societies.
Lawyer, Art Expert and Writer. Director of Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia. Resigned 13 January 1902, at the close of 20 years’ sendee.
