Entered C.S.A. at 15, serving under General Joe Johnston in campaign ending in fall of Atlanta. Transferred to naval department, and was in Georgia Reserves when war closed.
Edited Eclectic Magazine, Appleton’s Journal, etc., and contributed to leading periodicals. Established Florida Daily Times, Jacksonville, 1881, consolidating it with the Union, 1882, as the Times-Union. Removed to St. Louis as editor Missouri Republican (later St. Louis Republic), 1888, managing it until 1893.
Editor New York World, 1893-1895. Leased and edited St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 1895-1897.
Member World’s Columbian Commission, and originated the idea of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904, St. Louis. Prominent in Democratic party.
Married Eliza Cowperthwaite, 1871 (died 1888). Married second, Mistress.
