Royal Marines Academy Woolwich. Obtained a commission in the Royal Artillery, 1848.
Joined Royal Artillery as Lieutenant, 1849. Served Crimean Campaign, 1854-1855, at Inkerman, and throughout the siege, and at the fall of Sebastopol (despatches. Chevalier Legion of Honour, 5th class Medjidie, Crimean medal and two clasps, Turkish war medal, Brevet Major for distinguished service in the field).
Professor of Artillery at the Royal Marines Academy, Woolwich, 1859-1873. Member of Ordnance Select Committee, and of the Committee on Ordnance. Commanded the Field Artillery at Aldershot, 1879.
Retired, full pay, 1881. Decorated for service in the Crimea.
