Studied at Rossall School, Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.
Joined Royal Artillery, 1868. Madras Staff Corps, and appointed to Burmah Commission as Assistant - Commissioner 1872-1896. 1st Deputy-Commissioner of Mandalay after annexation of Upper Burmah.
Served throughout the Burmese War (medal, 2 clasps).
Accompanied the First British Expedition to the Jade Mines as political officer, 1888. Decorated for services in connection with the pacification of Upper Burmah. C. I.E. 1899; Justice of the Peace,Indian Staff Corps (retired 1896).
Fellow of the Zoological Society. Clubs: East India United Service. Northern Counties, Newcastle-on-Tyne.
