Studied at private school. Royal Military College, Sandhurst.
Joined Suffolk Regiment 1882. Aide-de-camp to Lieutenant-General Honourable Sir J. C. Dormer, C. in C. Madras, 1891. Burma expedition, 1885-1887 (medal and clasp).
Manipur, volunteered and proceeded to assistance of Chief Commissioner’s defeated escort 27 March in command of SO Punjabis and Goorkhas. Stormed and held Thobal, 31 March (slightly wounded), till relieved, 9 April. Horse shot, 13 April.
Severely wounded, 25 April (clasp. Promoted Captain and Brevet-Major). Granted 2 years’ service, and decorated with Victoria Cross.
All his surviving men received the Order of Merit for devotion and heroism. Victoria Cross; Commandant 89th Punjabis.
