Career
Came to Natal, 1872; began stock farming in Nottingham Road district, 1876. Justice of the Peace for colony, 1887. Elected Member of Legislative Assembly for Lion’s River Division on the introduction of Responsible Government, 1893.
Speaker, 1897-1899; Colonial Secretary, Natal, 1899-1903. Prime Minister, Natal, and Colonial Secretary, 1905-1906. One of the delegates for Natal to South Africa National Convention, 1908-1909.
