Joined 1st Royal Scots, 1899. Served with Scottish Rifles in South Africa, 1900 (wounded through hand and leg). Joined 1st Royal Munster Fusiliers at Warrenton.
Present at actions at Fourteen Streams, Lindley, Bethlehem, Slaptz Kranz, Prinsloo surrender. Extensive operations in Transvaal (medal, four clasps, despatches twice). Major, 4th Battalion Scottish Rifles (Cameronians); Master of South Union Foxhounds, 1901-1905.
