Background
NORRIS-NEWMAN, Charles L. W. MF.R.G.S. was born on August 22, 1852 in Elvington Hall, Yorkshire. Son of late C. Sherwood Newman, Justice of the Peace, Deputy-Lieutenant, and Countess de Rosa Y. Robyns.
(In Zululand with the British Army. Eyewitness from disast...)
In Zululand with the British Army. Eyewitness from disaster to victory. Very few professional writers are fortunate enough to be 'on the spot' when momentous events occur. Most often we are left with accounts by amateurs. Charles Norris-Newman is different. He accompanied Lord Chelmsfords expeditionary force into Zululand as a special correspondent and, but for his decision to attach himself to the staff would have been fatefully present at the slaughter that was Isandlwhana. In the event he had the chilling distinction of being able to describe the British Camp both before and immediately after the battle. Norris-Newman remained with the Army through most of the remainder of war and left us in his writing an essential, full and immediate view of the Zulu War of 1879 that is without parallel.

(Excerpt from With the Boers in the Transvaal and Orange F...)
Excerpt from With the Boers in the Transvaal and Orange Free State in 1880 1: With a Map of the South African Republic and Text of the Convention of 1884 It would be altogether impossible to commence a detailed account of the recent disturbances in the Transvaal without going back to the earliest days of the foundation of its settlement, in order to get at the original causes and effects which have, in the course of about forty years, led again to a collision between the two leading white races in South Africa, and a series of disastrous native wars -not yet finished, I fear - and, therefore, in order to enable my readers to have a clear and thorough conception of the state of affairs in the Transvaal just previous to the outbreak of 1880, it will be necessary for me to begin with the days of the Cape settlement by the English; and to show, gradually and consecutively, how the recent sad state of affairs has been brought about. The result is due partially, I admit, to the peculiarities and untractableness of the Boers themselves; but, principally, to the undoubted mismanagement and wilful blindness of the Imperial authorities both at home and out here, as evidenced by the various and contradictory policies pursued by successive Governors. For many years South Africa was a terra incognita to all in Great Britain except to the officials whose department had the government thereof. To others the idea simply was that the Cape was the half-way port between England and India, a naval and military station of more or less importance, which gave employment to a certain number of colonial officials and contributed little, if anything, to the general wealth or welfare of the great British Empire. Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ...later attack on the laager. Further reinforcements of the enemy coming up all round, Major Browne ordered the retreat of the skirmishers back on the laager, in order to induce the enemy to come within range of the Maxim guns already in position at the corners. This was successfully carried out, and the action became general. The Matabele did not stand long before the Maxim fire, the Inyamandhlovu being the chief sufferers, and retreating to the kopjies, when three companies of Commandant Raaff's men and two companies of British Bechuanaland Police were sent out to cut off their retreat, in which they failed, as the enemy were already in the kopjies, which were close by. In this charge Regimental Sergeant-Major Dahm, of Raaff's Rangers, was killed, and Sergeant Dempsy and Trooper Robinson wounded. Then Commandant Raaff withdrew his men from under fire, and two of Kgama's regiments under Sekomi were sent out with orders to clear the kopjies, which they did effectively with great bravery and determination, in hand-to-hand fighting, killing and wounding large numbers of the enemy, with a loss on their side of IO killed and I 5 wounded. Fighting began about 9.30 a.m., and was all over by I p.m., with the enemy in full retreat. After this Mr. Farley was sent out to scour the country in the direction of the Matangwe river, in order to find a suitable road for the advance; but owing to the scarcity of water, the column being large and requiring a great deal, he failed to do so, but discovered a suitable position in open veldt, on one of the head waters of the_Inkwisi river, near the Empandine kraal, which he found deserted, and the column moved on there two days afterwards and fortified the position. After a further delay of two...
