Ordained Lutheran ministry, 1860. Pastor Altoona, Shippensburg and Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, 1860-1871. Elected head of Southwestern Normal College, California, Pennsylvania, 1871 (institution obtained recognition by state as one of its normal schools, 1874).
Resigned, 1877, to become financial secretary Department of Public Instruction of Pennsylvania.
State librarian of Pennsylvania, 1878-1882, resigned. Professor Latin and English, Wittenberg College, 1882-1892.
With Southwestern State Normal School, since 1892, becoming associate professor German and English.
