Taught school in Ellington and Winchendon, Connecticut, 1846. Took walking trips in Ireland, England and Rhine Country, 1850, spent winter in Berlin. Went to Hungary, spring 1851, imprisoned for being Kossuth sympathizer.
Founded Children’s Aid Society (did work among immigrants), New York City, 1853.
Became friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Darwin, John Stuart Mill, during last years of his life. Made final trip to Europe for health reasons, circa 1889.
Author works including: Hungary in 1851. Published 1852; Home Life in Germany, 1853.
