Joined 2nd Durham Light Infantry, 1884. Army Ordnance Department, 1891. Served—Soudan, 1885-1886, frontier field force, action at Giniss (medal, bronze star).
Ashanti Expedition, 1895-1896 (star). Expedition to Dongola, action at Ilafir, 1896. (despatches, medal and clasp).
Nile Expedition, 1898, Battle of Khartoum (despatches, medal and clasp, and Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). South African war, 1899-1901 (medal, three clasps). Decorated for Nile Expedition, 1898. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1898; Chief Ordnance Officer, Southern Command since 1910.
