Began practice in Sunbury, 1878. Deputy secretary Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, 1890-1891. Secretary, later chairman Republican County Committee, Northumberland County, 1879-1888.

Enlisted as private Company E, 8th Infantry National Guard Pennsylvania, September 3, 1877. First lieutenant, May 6, 1878. Advanced through grades to major general, Pennsylvania Division, December 22, 1915.

Retired, April 1, 1919. Major general N.A., August 5, 1917.
