Apprenticed to booksellers Bradford & Inskeep, Philadelphia, 1808-1811. Teacher drawing United States Military Academy, 1833. Spent most of his life in London.

Member, professor painting Royal Academy.

Took most of his paintings from literary sources. Paintings include: Touchstone, Olivia, illustrations for an edit of Don Quixote.

Author: Memoirs of the Life of John Constable, 1843. A Handbook for Young Painters, 1855.
