Participated in capture of Fort Donelson, 1862, served at Battle of Shiloh.
Brigadier general United States Volunteers, 1863. Commanded expeditions on Mississippi River to destroy Confederate supply depots, 1863.
Participated in Atlanta campaign and “march to sea,” 1864. With Sherman on march through Carolinas.
Brevetted major general volunteers, 1865.
Discharged from volunteer service, 1866, commissioned colonel infantry in regular army. Served in West in Indian warfare, led expedition against Indians in Kansas, 1870. Retired, 1874.
