Brought to America in infancy. Student in dental office of Doctor Kennicott, Chicago, until August 1862, when enlisted as private 72d Illinois Infantry, serving in Northern Mississippi campaign, Yazoo Pass expedition, Vicksburg campaign and siege. Detailed chief clerk General Ransom’s headquarters, November 1863.
Appointed captain 49th United States.C.T. Detailed on staff of Lorenzo Thomas, adjutant general, organizing colored troops in southwest.
Rejoined command February 1864, serving with it in Louisiana until May 1865.
Provost marshall, Yazoo City, Mississippi, May-August 1865, western district of Mississippi, Vicksburg, August 1865-March 1866, when was mustered out.
Honorary Otis Adams, of Grafton, Massachusetts, June 25, 1868. Rejoined Doctor Kennicott, 1866, and later his partner in practice of dentistry until 1871, then practiced alone until 1898. Secretary dental department, Northwestern University, January since 1904.

Organized and was captain of a company of Union Veterans, serving in labor riots of 1877, and when I.N.G. was organized, enlisted as private in 1st Infantry, I.N.G., August 1877. Became captain Company I, October 1877.
Major, April 1886. Lieutenant colonel, February 1888.
Colonel, April 1889; voluntarily retired, November 1893. Organized regiment, at breaking out of Spanish-American War, 1898, which was accepted by the State and maintained at his own expense over 4 months, but was finally disbanded and honorary discharge by act of legislature.
