Gilpin, Charles Sidney was born on November 20, 1878 in Richmond, Virginia, United States. Son of Peter and Caroline (White) Gilpin.

Educated St. Francis School, Richmond.

Career

Began with Canadian Jubilee Singers, Hamilton, Ontario, 1903. Appeared with Williams and Walker’s “Abyssinia” company, and Gus Hill’s “Smart Set” company, 1905-1906, Pekin Stock Company, Chicago, 1907-1908, Pan-American Octette, 1911-1913, “Old Man’s Boy.” 1913-1914. Entered vaudeville, 1914.

Head of 1st negro dramatic stock company, New York, 1916. Creator of William Custis, Negro clergyman, in Drinkwater’s “Abraham Lincoln,” 1919. Starred in Eugene O’Neill’s “Emperor Jones,” 1920-1921.
