FROM THE DUST JACKET FLAP: This wonderfully entertaining mystery introduces a teenage detective of matchless skill and ingenuity -- the one and only Brains Benton. Just as Sherlock Holmes was assisted by Dr. Watson, so Brains is aided by his resourceful pal Jimmy Carson. In this exciting story, the two young private investigators set out to help a boy named Skeets Fenton who is trying to regain rightful control of the Fenton circus, which was taken from him shortly after his father died. Only a secret message left by Mr. Fenton before his death can establish Skeets' claim -- but the message cannot be found. In their search for the message, Brains and Jimmy become involved with a band of colorful characters, including Bimbo, a former circus clown, and his elephant, Marjory; Bimbo's wife, who was once a fortuneteller and mind reader; and Otto and the Joker, the sinister pair who took over the circus from Skeets. A kidnapping, a dangerous attempt to search Otto's office, a wild race against time to a secret hideout in the backwoods -- these are only a few of the adventures that Brains and Jimmy encounter before they have solved the fascinating case of the missing messages.
