Charles Stewart Farnsworth, American army officer.


Farnsworth, Charles Stewart was born on October 29, 1862 in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Isaac Francis and Sarah (Moore) Farnsworth.


Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1887. Distinguished graduated from Army School of the Line and Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 1909, 10. Graduated from Army War College, Washington, 1916.


1 son, Robert James; married second, Helen D. Bosard, November 28, 1894 (died July 1951). Commissioned Second lieutenant 25th Infantry, 1887, advanced through grades to major general National Army, 1918. Served in Dakota Ty., Montana and North Dakota until 1893.

Professor military science and tactics U. North Dakota, 1893-1897. With 7th Infantry, Denver, 1897-1898. At Chickamauga Park (Georgia), Tampa (Florida), Santiago and Havana (Cuba) and Montauk Pt.

(New York) during Spanish-American War. In Alaska, 1899-1901. Constructing cantonments at the Presidio, San Francisco, 1902-1903.

Served in Philippines, Montana, Michigan, and Kansas, 1904-1910. Commander Fort Gibbon, Alaska, 1910-1911. Instructor, inspector Pennsylvania National Guard, 1911-1913.

Served in California, Texas, and Washington, 1913-1916. With Pershing’s punitive expedition, in Mexico, 1916. Commanding base of communications Columbus, New Mexico, later assistant chief of staff, El Paso District, until 1917.

Commandant Infantry School of Arms, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, 1917. Commanding 159th Infantry Brig., Camp Lee, Virginia, 1917-1918, commanding 37th Division, Advertising Educational Foundation, 1918-1919, participating in occupation of the Baccarat (Vosges Mountains) and Panne (St. Mihiel) sectors and in the offensives in the Argonne-Meuse and Ypres and Lys. Commanding Camp Bowie, Texas, Infantry school and Camp Benning, Georgia, 1919-1920.

Chief of Infantry, 1920-1925, retired.
