Shot through right lung in political quarrel during Tilden-Hayes campaign and obituary appeared next morning in his own paper. Was later Washington or special correspondent St. Louis Globe-Democrat, Pittsburg Dispatch, Philadelphia Times, New York Herald. Holds record for greatest number of words sent over wires in single day (Guiteau trial) and record of matter in single issue of New York Herald.
Traveled extensively for Pittsburg Dispatch and Indianapolis News: syndicate and magazine writer at New York, and political and special writer New York Herald. At London and Paris for McClure’s Magazine and as a syndicate writer various papers, 2 years. In Dreyfus riots, etc.
