Mary Chilton crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the Mayflower in 1620. Her parents were James Chilton, a tailor, and Sussanah Chilton. Mary went ashore at what was to become Plymouth Colony on the first rowboat.
She jumped ship landing on what is now Plymouth Rock.
Thus, she became the first woman to land on the shores of America. Her father died while still aboard ship, her mother died that first winter, and Mary was cared for by another family.
She eventually married John Winslow, a brother of Governor John Winslow of Massachusetts. Her line of descent goes ten generations to my mother, Katherine Wilbar Utter, and thus to me With The Westerly (Rhode Island) Sun, 1945-1991, editor, 1955-1991, co-public, 1967-1991.
