Practiced law in Louisville, 1874-1879, Woodford Company, Kentucky, 1879-1885. Magistrate on Woodford Company (Kentucky) bench, 1880-1884. Envoy Extraordinary anu Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States to Peru, 1885-1889.

Democrat until 1896, then Gold Democrat, and independent. Supported Republican ticket and stumped Kentucky in state and nat. campaigns, 1900, 04, 08. Advocate of Democratic Party, since 1908.
