Educated in schools of Franklin. Learned printer’s trade and published a newspaper when a boy. Began study of law, 1860.
Served in “Venango Grays” (Company C, 10th Pennsylvania Reserve Volumes), 1861-1863, and took part in numerous battles from Dranesville to Gettysburg. Special agent United States Treasury for Eastern Virginia and North Carolina District, 1863-1865. Admitted to Pennsylvania bar, August 1865.
