(Sir Charles William Chadwick Oman, KBE (1860 – 1946) was ...)
Sir Charles William Chadwick Oman, KBE (1860 – 1946) was a British military historian of the early 20th century. His reconstructions of medieval battles from the fragmentary and distorted accounts left by chroniclers were pioneering. His style is an appealing mixture of astute analysis and dramatic narrative. He was born in Muzaffarpur district, India, the son of a British planter, and was educated at Oxford University. In 1881 he was elected to a Prize Fellowship at All Souls College, where he would remain for the rest of his career. He was elected the Chichele Professor of modern history at Oxford in 1905, serving as President of the Royal Historical Society (1917–1921), the Numismatic Society and the Royal Archaeological Institute. Oman was a Conservative member of Parliament for the University of Oxford constituency from 1919 to 1935, and was knighted in 1920. This Chronicon edition is the second volume of a two-volume edition, first published in 1898. It is a critical analysis of the military strategy and tactics employed by the British, and Continental armies during the later Medieval period. It describes the advances in strategy, tactics, fortifications, weaponry, armor, and it includes dramatic accounts of some of the significant battles fought during this turbulent period in Scotland, Ireland, England, France, Italy, Iberia, and Austria such as Crecy, Poictiers, Taglicozzo, Bouvines, Marchfeld, Bannockburn, Navarette, and others.

CHAPTER VI CRASSUS Napoleon, in one of his cynical moods, once asked his courtiers how the world would take the news of his sudden death, supposing that some chance bullet cut him off before his time. They hastened to give him all sorts of flattering versions of the dismay and regret that would fill all Europe. "No," said the Emperor, " that is not the sort of thing that would happen. All that would occur would be that every one would draw a long breath, and say with a sigh of relief,' Well, that's all over.'" And so, it may be surmised, did things go at Sulla's death. When men knew that his iron hand would never interfere again in politics, they felt as if a long nightmare was over, and abandoning the assumed characters that they had enacted during his lifetime, dropped back into their real selves. Instead of the majestic and united Optimate party which seemed to stand so firm under his protection, there was now only a mass of slack senators, who wished to take life quietly, with the maximum of enjoyment, and a few ambitions men who felt at last that they could display their ambition without risking their necks. The Senate still contained some men of real ability who were loyal to the oligarchic constitution, such as the Epicurean general Lucullus, Quintus Metellus, who had made a good military reputation, the orator Hortensius, and Catulus, the son of that Catulus who had fought so well against the Cimbri--a somewhat duller reflection of his father's virtues. But the great majority were apathetic UNREST AFTER SULLA'S DEATH 163 nobodies, while the two persons who were most important and influential among Sulla's lieutenants were men who disliked the Sullan constitution, simply because it gave them no scope for the display of the...

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

In both, as it is said, the Britons were victorious, and their enemies can only have been the Mercians.1 It seems, at any rate, certain that Ine of Wessex found no hindrance from Aethelbald in the last years of his reign. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, always interested in the acts of the house of Cerdic, gives a number of notes concerning him, but they are all occupied with civil wars in the South, not with any struggle with Mercia. In 721, as we read, Ine slew the aetheling Cynewulf, apparently a domestic rebel. In the following year another aetheling, one Eald-bert "the exile," raised Sussex and Surrey against him, but was beaten and expelled. In connection with this incident we are told that Aethelburh, Ine's consort " razed Taunton, which her husband had previously built". This puzzling entry has been interpreted as meaning that, while the king was busy elsewhere, some of his enemies seized Taunton, which Aethelburh took and destroyed, fighting in her husband's behalf.1 Three years later, we are told that Ealdbert returned to the charge, once more found harbourage and assistance among the South Saxons, and was for a second time defeated by Ine: on this occasion, however, he failed to escape, and was slain in battle. 1 This note is under the year 721 both in theAnnales Cambriac and the Brut y Tywysogion. They are noted along with a battle in Cornwall in which Rodri Mal-wynog, a king of Wales, took part. Was this against Ine? Three years later Ine, now an elderly man, for he had reigned thirty-seven years, copied the example of his predecessor Ceadwalla by laying down his crown, and going on a journey to Rome " desirous to spend some time of his pilgrimage upon earth in the neighbourhood of the holy place" (728)....

(English history are so short, sudden, and dramatic as the...)
English history are so short, sudden, and dramatic as the great insurrection of June 1381, which still bears in most histories its old and not very accurate title of Wat Tyler s Rebellion .O nly 1a short month separates the first small riot in Essex, with which the rising started, from the final petty skirmish in East Anglia at which the last surviving band of insurgents was ridden down and scattered to the winds. But within i the space that intervened between May 30 and June 28,1381, half England had been aflame, and for some days it had seemed that the old order of things was about to crash down in red ruin, and that complete anarchy would supervene. To most contemporary writers the whole rising seemed an inexplicable phenomenon a storm that arose out of a mere nothing, an ignorant riot against a harsh and unpopular tax, such as had often been seen before. But this storm assumed vast dimensions, spread over the whole horizon, swept down on the countryside with the violence of a typhoon, threatened universal destruction, and then suddenly passed away almost as inexplicably as it had arisen. The monastic chroniclers, to whom we owe most of our descriptions of the rebellion Walsingham and his fellows were not the men to understand the meaning of such a phenomenon ;they were annalists, not political philosophers or students of social statics. But when the battle was really won, the leaders and the led were equally incapable of using their advantage. The men turned to pillage, and we have no proof that any of their ofiicers thought of calling them off or conducting them to another part of the field. Hence the Sultan, with his usual ability, was able to rally his men, and snatch a victory out of the jaws of defeat. 1 Itinzrarium, p. 70, and letter of Theobald and Peter Leo in Ralph de Diceto. 9 Boha-ed-din (p. 145) took great pains to make out the sum of the Christian losses. He considered the number of seven thousand, that which was generally accepted in the Sultan's camp, as exaggerated.
