Barber, Charles Williams was born on September 21, 1872 in Gloucester Company, New Jersey, United States. Son of George W. and Ellen (Taggart) Barber.


Public schools and business college. Studied law in office of Honorary Hari Singh Gour Grey, attorney general of New Jersey, 1899.

Captain, March 3, 1899. Honorary mustered out, April 6, 1899. First lieutenant 28th United States Infantry, July 5, 1899.

Honorary mustered out volunteer service, May 1, 1901. Second in command Lieutenant 2d Infantry United States Army, February 2, 1901. First lieutenant, November 11, 1901.

Captain 4th Infantry, March 11, 1911. Assigned to 3d Infantry, January 1, 1915. Retired as major, September 1, 1916.

Brigadier general, N.A., July 25, 1917.
