Second lieutenant 113th New York Volunteer Infantry, August 19, 1862. Promoted to major in Civil War and entered regular army as Second lieutenant 3d Artillery, September 21, 1867. Promoted through grades to brigadier general, April 12, 1905, and retired following day.
Bvtd.: First lieutenant, September 21, 1867, “for gallant and meritorious services in battle of Spottsylvania, Virginia”.
Captain, September 21, 1867, for same in battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia. Also breveted Lieutenant volunteer New York volumes
Wounded in hand and leg at battle of Cold Harbor, June 3, 1864, with loss of part of left hand. Participated in campaigns in Spanish-American War and Philippine insurrection, July 1898-June 1900, wounded before Manila, July 31, 1898.
Retired at own request after 40 years’ service, April 13, 1905.
