Enlisted as private Company D, 2d Ohio Infantry, April 17, 1861. Discharged, August 9, 1861. Commissioned captain 22d Ohio Infantry, May 1, 1862.

Honorary mustered out, August 28, 1865. Appointed from Ohio, Second lieutenant 119th United States Infantry, March 31, 1866. Transfered to 28th Infantry, September 21, 1866.

First lieutenant, January 1, 1867. Captain 22d Infantry, March 7, 1867. Major 6th Infantry, December 29, 1894.

Lieutenant-colonel, July 1, 1898. Colonel, December 15, 1899. Brig.-general United States of America, July 29, 1903.

Retired at own request after 40 years’ service, July 30, 1903. Bvtd. major, February 27, 1890, for action against Indians at Spring Creek, Montana, October 15 and 16, 1876. Home: 70 Lexington Avenue, Columbus, Ohio.
