Cameron was taken with pick #7 in the 2013 Rookie Draft. Upon completing primary school, he began boarding at Marist College Ashgrove in Brisbane on an AIEF scholarship and played baseball at the state level for Queensland. He later switched to the more popular rugby union at his high school in the elite schoolboys competition.
In his last year of schooling he was introduced to Australian rules football for the first time at the age of 16.
He would later reflect that he "didn"t really like it". At the end of 2011 he moved with his family to Newman, Western Australia and was talked into playing for the local football team the Newman Saints.
Cameron began playing club football for the first time for the Newman Saints in 2012 and impressed. Towards the end of the season he was invited to play for the Swan Districts Football Club and played three colts games.
Entering his first pre-season ever, he impressed the coaches so much that he earned a spot in the senior team for the first round of the 2013 WAFL season.
After solidifying his place in the Swan Districts senior team, Cameron represented Western Australia at the 2013 American Federation of Labor-Congress Under 18 Championships. In his first season at Adelaide, Cameron debuted in Round 9, 2014 against Collingwood. Despite battling a groin injury, Cameron played seven games in his first American Federation of Labor-Congress season and kicked nine goals, including a bag of three against Fremantle in round 12.
