Charlize Theron is a South African-born actress, best known for her roles in such films as Monster, for which she won an Academy Award, Snow White and the Huntsman, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Fate of the Furious and Atomic Blonde.
Background
Ethnicity:
Charlize Theron is from an Afrikaner family, and her ancestry includes Dutch as well as French and German; her French forebears were early Huguenot settlers in South Africa
Charlize Theron was born in Benoni, Transvaal Province, South Africa, on August 7, 1975. Her parents were co-owners of a road construction company, Charles and Gerda Theron. The Afrikaans-speaking family lived on a working farm outside of Johannesburg. The Theron household was an unhappy one, and as Charles struggled with alcoholism, he became physically abusive. On 21 June 1991, Theron's father threatened both teenaged Charlize and her mother while drunk, physically attacking her mother and shooting a gun at both of them. Theron watched as Gerda retrieved her own handgun, shot and killed Charles; the murder was deemed an act of self-defense, and Gerda was never charged with a crime. In the wake of the death, Gerda assumed ownership of the company, and Theron concocted a story that her father had been the victim of a lethal car accident.
Although seeing herself as a dancer, Theron at 16 won a one-year modelling contract at a local competition in Salerno and with her mother moved to Milan, Italy. After Theron spent a year modelling throughout Europe, she and her mother moved to the United States, both New York City and Miami.
In 2007, Theron became a naturalized citizen of the United States, while retaining her South African citizenship.
Education
Theron's childhood chores included tending livestock, her passion for dance became evident early on. To foster her artistic leanings, Theron began ballet lessons at age six. Theron attended Putfontein Primary School (Laerskool Putfontein), a period during which she has said she was not "fitting in." At thirteen, Theron was sent to boarding school and began her studies at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg.
Theron attended the Joffrey Ballet School, where she trained as a ballet dancer until a knee injury closed this career path.
At 16, Theron entered a Johannesburg modeling contest, which she won. She soon traveled to Italy, where she won the International New Model Today competition and began a modeling career in earnest. After traveling to New York at the age of 18, she left high fashion to attempt a career in dance. Her studies with the Joffrey Ballet were curtailed by severe knee injuries, forcing her to abandon a dance career, which led Theron - at her mother's behest - to travel to Los Angeles to try her luck with acting.
In 1994, her mother bought Theron a one-way ticket to Los Angeles, and Charlize started visiting all of the agents on Hollywood Boulevard, but without any luck. She went to a bank to cash a check for $500 she received from her mother and became furious when she learned that the bank would not cash it because it was an out-of-state check. She made a scene and an agent gave her his card She soon found, however, that her Afrikaner accent was a barrier in landing speaking roles. Watching hours of television, she strove to hide her South African roots with perfect American inflections.
Following an inauspicious bit part in 1994's Children of the Corn III, Theron won her first dose of recognition with 2 Days in the Valley (1996). The film wasn't particularly successful, but it did give her both much-needed exposure and critical praise. The film also served as the stepping stone to her first leading role, that of Keanu Reeves' embattled wife in The Devil's Advocate (1997). The film drew poor reviews, but Theron managed to win widespread praise for her performance.
Her next project, Trial and Error (1997), surfaced briefly before disappearing with nary a trace, but the subsequent Mighty Joe Young (1998) netted Theron more positive notices. Her ascent was confirmed with her casting in Celebrity, Woody Allen's 1998 cameo-fest that also featured turns from everyone from Kenneth Branagh to Winona Ryder to Leonardo DiCaprio to Isaac Mizrahi. In her portrayal of a perpetually aroused supermodel, Theron shone in a role seemingly designed to allow her to flaunt her natural attributes and little else. She was rewarded with more substantial - not to mention multilayered - work in The Cider House Rules (1999), Lasse Hallström's Oscar-winning adaptation of John Irving's novel. As a troubled young woman with secrets to hide, Theron received star billing alongside Michael Caine and Tobey Maguire.
In the wake of The Cider House Rules came a few highly publicized but ultimately disappointing projects, including John Frankenheimer's Reindeer Games (2000), Robert Redford's The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), and Sweet November (2001), the last of which reunited her with erstwhile co-star Keanu Reeves. Theron was also reunited with Woody Allen in his The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001), another widely anticipated film that, despite a high-profile cast and stylish period design, was both a critical and commercial underachiever.
None of this, however, nudged Theron from her A-list status, something that was confirmed by her casting in the flashy, star-studded 2003 remake of The Italian Job, a much-beloved 1969 comedy caper starring Michael Caine. The 2003 version featured Mark Wahlberg in the starring role, with Theron, Edward Norton, Seth Green, and Mos Def, among others, backing him up. That same year, Theron switched gears and dove headfirst into the "serious actress" category with her starring role in Monster, the crime drama based upon the real-life story of serial killer Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute who, in the late '80s, murdered seven men in Florida. Co-starring Christina Ricci as Wuornos' lover, the film promised to show audiences a side of Theron that certainly hadn't been hinted at in her previous portrayals of models, girlfriends, and Southern debutantes. It was evidently successful as Theron was showered with more than a dozen awards including an Oscar following her first-ever Academy Award nomination.
Theron appeared in two movies in 2004, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and Head in the Clouds. After her turn as Britt Ekland in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004), Theron took on another strong drama, starring in 2005's North Country with Sissy Spacek and Frances McDormand. Her portrayal of an iron miner fighting sexual harassment in the workplace earned her nominations at the Golden Globes and the Oscars. The same year, she starred in the big-screen adaptation of the MTV cult cartoon Aeon Flux and made multiple guest appearances on the award-winning television comedy, Arrested Development.
In 2008, Theron returned to the superhero genre in Hancock with co-star Will Smith. In 2009, she appeared in The Road, an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s post-apocalyptic novel of the same name. In the dramedy Young Adult (2011), Theron starred as a willfully immature woman who returns to her hometown in pursuit of her high-school sweetheart. Theron showed another side of her acting talent and received a Golden Globe nod for her portrayal of a writer facing personal and professional difficulties.
Theron took on the role of the Evil Queen in 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman. She then portrayed Meredith Vickers in the 2012 sci-fi thriller Prometheus. In 2014, she switched gears and starred in Seth MacFarlane’s comedy, A Million Ways to Die in the West. In 2015, Theron starred as the strong and determined Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, which also starred Tom Hardy as Max, and played Libby Day, a character who survived the brutal murder of her family, in Dark Places. The following year, it was back to Evil Queendom for The Huntsman: Winter's War before a featured role in The Last Face, a political drama directed by Sean Penn and co-starring Javier Bardem.
In 2017, Theron starred as MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton in Atomic Blonde, based on the graphic novel The Coldest City, and continued in the action-thriller genre as a cyberterrorist in The Fate of the Furious.
Theron’s films in 2018 included the dark comedy Gringo, about a pharmaceutical company executive who is kidnapped by members of a drug cartel in Mexico, and Tully, for which she earned enthusiastic reviews for her uncompromising portrayal of an overwhelmed mother of three. Theron later starred in the romantic comedy Long Shot (2019), playing a U.S. secretary of state who is planning on running for president.
Theron was the first South African-born woman to win an Oscar. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California on September 29, 2005.
Theron has more than 90 prestigious nominations and awards, including Academy Award, Golden Gloe Award, British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award nomination and others. Theron was nominated for the 2019 Golden Globe Award in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category for her role as Marlo in Tully.
Theron wasn’t raised religious. As a child, her mother encouraged her to figure out faith and spirituality on her own. Theron said: "My mum always told me, even as a kid: ‘Come to your own conclusion.’ So, I started going to church and then stopped, for some reason… I think I am pagan, at heart."
Politics
Theron is a liberal Democrat who supports abortion rights, gay rights, animal rights, and gives all her political donations to Democrats. Theron has participated in marches and rallies in support of her pro-choice stance on abortion and she has done work for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
But the full weight of Theron’s star power of late has gone to gay marriage and gay rights. She’s been on network television to talk about it, spoken about her stance in numerous interviews, marched at gay rights demonstrations, and even refused to get married because of what she considers marriage injustice.
The issue has caused Theron to question government interference in social issues. She once said: "When a government starts to tell us who can love and what is good love… I do have a problem with that. I do have a problem with the fact that our government hasn’t stepped up enough to make this federal, to make [gay marriage] legal. I think everybody has that right."
Views
The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) was created in 2007 by Theron, who the next year was named a UN Messenger of Peace, in an effort to support African youth in the fight against HIV/AIDS. CTAOP's mission is to help keep African youth safe from HIV/AIDS. The project is committed to supporting community-engaged organizations that address the key drivers of the disease. Although the geographic scope of CTAOP is Sub-Saharan Africa, the primary concentration has mostly been Charlize's home country of South Africa. CTAOP's approach is based on the belief that community-based organizations on the ground understand the social and structural relationships of their communities better than anyone. By supporting these organizations through grant-giving, networking, and spotlighting their work, CTAOP enables communities to mobilize and empower themselves to prevent HIV.
In 2008, Theron was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace. In his citation, Ban Ki-Moon said of Theron "You have consistently dedicated yourself to improving the lives of women and children in South Africa, and to preventing and stopping violence against women and girls." She recorded a public service announcement in 2014 as part of their Stop Rape Now program.
In December 2009, CTAOP and TOMS Shoes partnered to create a limited edition unisex shoe. The shoe was made from vegan materials and inspired by the African baobab tree, the silhouette of which was embroidered on blue and orange canvas. Ten-thousand pairs were given to destitute children, and a portion of the proceeds went to CTAOP.
Theron is involved in women's rights organizations and has marched in pro-choice rallies. Theron also is a supporter of animal rights and an active member of PETA. She appeared in a PETA ad for its anti-fur campaign.
Theron is a supporter of same-sex marriage and attended a march and rally to support that in Fresno, California, on 30 May 2009. She publicly stated that she refused to get married until same-sex marriage became legal in the United States, saying: "I don't want to get married because right now the institution of marriage feels very one-sided, and I want to live in a country where we all have equal rights. I think it would be exactly the same if we were married, but for me to go through that kind of ceremony because I have so many friends who are gays and lesbians who would so badly want to get married, that I wouldn't be able to sleep with myself." Theron further elaborated on her stance in a June 2011 interview on Piers Morgan Tonight. She stated: "I do have a problem with the fact that our government hasn't stepped up enough to make this federal, to make [gay marriage] legal. I think everybody has that right."
In March 2014, CTAOP was among the charities that benefited from the annual Fame and Philanthropy fundraising event on the night of the 86th Academy Awards. Theron was an honored guest along with Halle Berry and keynote speaker James Cameron.
Quotations:
"I think the reason why female directors are so successful is because they're not just telling women stories. They might be telling stories that affect women but their studies on men are done so well so that they're universal directors. So I really believe this is a talent, and just understanding the human conflict is so good that they can tell any genre, any kind of story, and that's why I think they're doing so well."
"Fur isn't necessary. It doesn't make sense to me to let these animals suffer for fashion."
"It bothers me that in this society, it's okay seeing a guy blow another's head off, but a child seeing Janet Jackson's boob at the Super Bowl is the worst thing that could happen. It's not the end of the world! It's just a breast!"
"We all understand situations where it's swim or drown. Sometimes we surprise ourselves when we start swimming and see how well we can do it."
"I live a very simple life. I don't have to make these giant movies. I don't have a yacht or a private plane. As long as I can maintain this life, which is pretty low-maintenance and simple, then all of a sudden you don't have to worry about all that stuff. It's such a blessed place to be in. I don't have to take a job to pay a mortgage on a house that I can't afford. My life comes first, then my job. I'm incredibly lucky to be in a position where I don't have to work all the time to live."
"I wasn't technically the greatest, but I succeeded and got lead roles because when I died, I died, and when I was spinning into madness, I was spinning into madness."
"There's this kind of idea that someone like me would be horrible with women. That acknowledgment that if you look a certain way, you can't be a girl's girl. I have way deeper relationships with girls than I do with guys. I get along with guys. The women in my life are the ones who move me. It sounds so hokey, but I've been blessed with incredible women in my life."
Personality
Charlize Theron was born with extra-ordinary drive and determination. She is a born leader. Charlize insists on her right to make up her own mind; she demands freedom of thought and action and does not let anything or anyone stand in her way once she is committed to her goal.
Theron assumes the responsibility to be the protector and provider for those she loves. She demands respect and attention and becomes irritated and even domineering when important things do not go her way.
Physical Characteristics:
Theron has Blonde hair and green eyes. She has always sported a very lean, slim, fit and even tight body. It is obvious that her 55 kilograms are as a result of hard work and compromise. If there is one other thing she is known for though, it is her ability to alter her weight drastically for her movie roles. In 2003, she pulled off one of the most epic weight gains on screen. She gained 30 pounds for her portrayal of Aileen Wuornos, a real-life serial killer in the movie Monster. In order to gain weight, she simply stopped all her usual fitness routines and ate a whole lot of donuts and potato chips. So in order to lose weight, she did just the opposite. Theron is rather tall, she once said: "I’m 5-10, 5-9…I have really bad posture, and my head is always down." She was named the "Sexiest Woman Alive" by Esquire magazine in 2007.
As part of her role for Tully, she had to gain 35 pounds in order to transform her body to look like that of a mother of three. It took her about 6 months to gain additional weight.
As a child, Theron had suffered from jaundice that caused dental problems. She said in an interview with The Sun that "I had no teeth until I was 11. I had these fangs because I had jaundice when I was a kid and I was put on so many antibiotics that my teeth rotted. They had to cut them out. So I never had baby teeth."
While filming in Berlin, Germany, Theron suffered a herniated disc in her neck, caused by a fall while filming a series of back handsprings. It required her to wear a neck brace for a month. In July 2009, she was diagnosed with a serious stomach virus, thought to be contracted while overseas. While filming The Road, Theron injured her vocal cords during the labor screaming scenes.
Quotes from others about the person
"Well, I’ve made the comment that Charlize Theron should be the next Bond because she scares the hell out of me. You know I worked with her on Snow White and the Huntsman, watching her in those fight scenes doing it in those high heels and an eight-foot-long gown was even more impressive so. And I just think, 'Why not, it’s time'." - Chris Hemsworth
