At the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, Kalisz won silver in the 400-meter individual medley, finishing with a time of 4:09.22, which was half a second behind gold medal winner Daiya Seto of Japan. Kalisz won the 400-yard individual medley at the 2013 National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships in Indianapolis as a freshman, finishing with a time of 3:38.05.
The following year, Kalisz successfully defended his title and broke the American record in the 400-yard individual medley previously held by Tyler Clary with a time of 3:34.50.
