Cherie Priest was born on July 30, 1975, in Tampa, Florida, United States. She is the daughter of an Army father. She has a brother and a sister. The family moved around and lived in many places such as Florida, Texas, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
Cherie Priest graduated from Forest Lake Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist boarding school in Apopka, Florida in 1993. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee in 1998. In 2001 she left the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a Master of Arts degree in Rhetoric/Professional writing.
Cherie Priest began her professional career as a senior site merchandiser at ARS Interactive in 2002 where she worked till 2006. Meanwhile, she began writing books. Her first novel, Four and Twenty Blackbirds, was published in 2003. Wings to the Kingdom, the second book from the Eden Moore series, was written also in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and then Priest moved to Seattle, Washington. There she completed the Eden Moore series with the book Not Flesh Nor Feathers (2007). The same year she began her work as a book reviewer at Reed Business Information and as a content provider on amazon.com.
The style in which Cherry Priest initially worked can be described as well as Southern Gothic or Horror. Several stories were written in the genre of science fiction. But her most famous work was a series of novels in the steampunk genre, started with Boneshaker (2009). In 2012 she moved back to Tennessee. The Borden Dispatches series and other books appeared during her living there. In 2017 she came back to Seattle where she lives now with her husband. She is engaged in copywriting and editing, researching, providing of PR materials, web maintenance and more at The Linda Jacks Campaign.
In addition to her novels, Priest was a reviewer for the Bram Stoker Award-winning website Chiaroscuro and currently is a staff member of Subterranean Press. She is a regular attendee and panelist at DragonCon and several other genre conventions around the country such as Penguicon and Steamcon. She is also known for giving talks and writing articles about the hobby of urban exploration.
In March 2006, Cherie Priest won the Lulu Blooker Prize for Fiction for Four and Twenty Blackbirds, becoming the first-ever winner in that category. Cherie Priest's book Boneshaker was nominated for both the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award; it was a Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Award winner and winner of the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. Dreadnought was a finalist for the Darrell Award in 2011 and won the 2011 Endeavour Award for Distinguished Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel. Not Flesh Nor Feathers was nominated for the 2009 Endeavour Award for Distinguished Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel.

2011Although Priest was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church, she has no further contact with the church and claims no religious affiliation.
Cherie Priest's first novel Four and Twenty Blackbirds was inspired by some sidewalk drawings done by first-graders. Her novel Fathom started out as a sliver of a dream, barely remembered, about an abandoned house she saw on an island off the coast of St. Petersburg.
