Set in the 1930s in eastern North Carolina, this is the story of a woman whose parents have forced her to give up her desire to become a teacher and to marry a man she does not love. Isolated in a primitive cabin, Cindy is a devoted mother but is filled with longing for a different kind of life. She knows there must be something outside the Pocosin, the marshland that surrounds her home. She must decide whether to continue living the life others expect of her or to live for herself.

Cherry Johnson received a Bachelor of Arts degree at North Carolina State University in 1990. In 1992 she received a Master of Arts degree in English. She wrote a doctoral dissertation on low academic performance and specific learning disabilities and got a Doctor of Education degree from Liberty University School of Education in 2009.
Career
Cherry Johnson is a business owner. In prior years she worked at Wake Technical Community College as an English instructor. She was also a contributor to the periodical Christian Science Monitor.
In 1996 she published a book Half Moon Pocosin. The novel takes place during the 1930s when the Great Depression rendered the poor country folk even poorer. The story depicts Cindy, a young wife, and mother, living in an isolated cabin that has a wood-burning stove but no electricity or running water. Cindy continues to dream of fleeing Half Moon Pocosin to become a schoolteacher and to see something of the rest of humanity.
