He was born in the estate of "Svolna". in Vilensk noble family in province.

In 1857-1859 he studied at gymnasia.
In 1859-1863 he stydied at Noble institute in Vilnus.
Having partuicipated in Polish rebellion in 1863-1864 he was soldied and sent to Omsk. In Omsk he started to do geological and paleontilogical research. In 1859 he was exempted from military service. He was a political prisoner until 1883. he investigated the vicinities of Omsk, studied the structure of Baikal shores and made the first geological map of that region. He investigated Selenga and lower Tunguska. In 1885 was amnested. Having been invited by the Academy of Science he moved Petersburg. On his way there, he did geological research of the post-road from Irkutsk to the Urals. In 1891-1892 he investigated Kolyma and Endigirka. In expedition he died and was buried in the village of Kolymskoye near Omodon river mouth. He put forward the idea of the evolutionary development of relief, worked out of the first paleotechtonic schemes of internal regions of Siberia. He was awarded with 3 gold medals of Russian Geographical Association. The systems of mountain chains in Yakytya, Magadan region and Zabaykalle were named after him.
