Active in the Black Consciousness South African Students’ Organisation (SASO), detained for five months, 1976. Member, Students’ Representative Council, 1981. Helped in formation of Western Cape region of UDF, 1983, General-Secretary.

Member, Interim Leadership Group, South African Party, since 1990. Member, Interim Leadership Committee, ANC, since 1990. Invited as part of UDF delegation.
International Centre for the Swedish Labour Movement, 1986, met official of Sweden’s ruling Socialist Democratic Party, key labour figures and Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Development Aid. Returned to South Africa and was detained under emergency regulations for three weeks, 1986. Served with restriction order on her release.
Spokesperson, Western Cape Defiance Campaign, 1989. Member, Congress of South African Trade Unions. Member, National Education Crisis Committee, 1989 Organisation of African Unity, Harare, this was first time South Africans from inside country had formally attended a meeting of this body, delegation supported ANC document setting out agreed preconditions for negotiations in South Africa.
Detained again, 1989 for two weeks. Formed part of ANC team which met South African Govt, representatives, Groote Schnurr, Cape Town, 1990. Member, Interim Leadership Group, South African Communisty Party, since 1990.
