When it comes to raising their kids, Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) and Brad (Will Ferrell) finally have this co-parenting thing down. That is, until their dads come to town, putting their newfound partnership to the ultimate test in this hilarious comedy.
Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger is a former US Airlines pilot, who successfully ditched US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River after it struck a flock of Canada geese, thereby saving all passengers. He is also a notable speaker on aviation safety.
Background
Ethnicity:
Chesley's father was a descendant of Swiss-German immigrants named Sollenberger.
Sullenberger was born in Denison, Texas on January 23, 1951. He has one sister, Mary. According to Mary, Chesley Sullenberger built model planes and aircraft carriers during his childhood and says he became interested in flying after seeing military jets from an Air Force base near his house.
Education
Chesley Sullenberger was educated at school in Denison, graduating in 1969. At the age of 12, his IQ was deemed high enough to join Mensa International. A brilliant pupil, he was the president of the Latin club and first-chair flutist.
He enrolled in the United States Air Force Academy in 1969 and graduated as an officer in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He also holds master's degrees from Purdue University and the University of Northern Colorado.
Sullenberger served as a fighter pilot for the United States Air Force, flying Vietnam-era F-4 Phantom II jets. He advanced to become a flight leader and a training officer, attaining the rank of captain. During his active duty, he was stationed in North America and Europe. After serving in the Air Force, in February 1980 Sullenberger became an airline pilot with Pacific Southwest Airlines, later acquired by US Airways, until his retirement from commercial flying in March 2010.
Prior to gaining worldwide attention, Sullenberger was an active and ardent safety advocate throughout his four-decade-long career. He was selected to perform accident investigation duties for the United States Air Force and served as an Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) representative during a National Transportation Safety Board accident investigation. Additionally, Sullenberger served as a Local Air Safety Chairman for ALPA and was a member of one of their national technical committees, where he contributed to the creation of a Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circular. He was also instrumental in developing and implementing the Crew Resource Management course used by US Airways, and he taught the course to hundreds of other airline crewmembers.
In 1980, Sullenberger joined Pacific Southwest Airlines as a commercial pilot. (Pacific Southwest was acquired in 1988 by what would become US Airways.) Over his years as a professional pilot, he was also an instructor.
Sullenberger's years of airline safety instruction and study paid off on January 15, 2009, when the US Airways plane he was piloting struck a large flock of Canada geese during liftoff from New York's LaGuardia Airport. Both engines were damaged, and suddenly neither was providing any thrust. With air traffic control, Sullenberger discussed his options: either return to LaGuardia or land at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. Sullenberger quickly deemed the situation too dire for the plane to stay in the air long enough for either plan to be successful, so he decided that ditching (performing an emergency water landing) the jet in the Hudson River was the best option.
He announced over the intercom, "Brace for impact," and took the plane down onto the water's surface. The maneuver was a success, and all 155 people onboard flight 1549 survived, and all but a few uninjured. The crew evacuated the passengers and Captain Sullenberger left the plane last.
Sullenberger retired after 30 years as a commercial pilot. He then concentrated on running his safety consulting business, Safety Reliability Methods, Inc., which he founded in 2007, and on speaking in the United States and abroad about flight safety issues.
Sullenberger is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters and also wrote Making a Difference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America's Leaders. Clint Eastwood directed the major motion picture about Sullenberger’s life, titled SULLY, based on Highest Duty. Tom Hanks starred in the lead role; Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney co-starred. The film was released to critical acclaim in September 2016 and garnered four Broadcast Film Critics nominations and one Academy Award nomination. Highest Duty was republished that year as SULLY: My Search for What Really Matters.
He presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2011, as well as the Swiss Economic Forum that same year. From 2009 to 2013, he served as co-chairman of EAA Young Eagles - a program that inspires and educates youth about aviation.
Sullenberger appeared as himself in a cameo role in the 2017 film Daddy's Home 2.
Named one of 2009’s 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine, Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger is an international hero. He received calls of thanks from President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama, following his inauguration. He was an honored guest at President Obama's inauguration, and both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives passed resolutions praising Sullenberger and his crew.
In 2013, the entire Airways Flight 1549 crew was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.

For most of his adult life, Sullenberger was a registered Republican.
In October 2009, it was reported that the Republican Party had approached Sullenberger about running against Democratic U.S. Representative Jerry McNerney of California's 11th congressional district in the 2010 elections. Sullenberger's publicist said that he had no desire to run for public office.
Views
Sullenberger is an international lecturer and keynote speaker at educational institutions, corporations and non-profit organizations about the importance of aviation and patient safety, high-performance systems improvement, leadership, crisis management, life-long preparation, and living a life of integrity.
On December 7, 1995, Sullenberger's father committed suicide by gunshot shortly after being released from the hospital following major surgery. He had been suffering from depression in the face of a long and difficult convalescence ahead of him. He left no note. As a result of this, Sullenberger became a suicide prevention activist, having promoted National Suicide Prevention Week and National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
