Mondello received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in genetics and molecular biology from the University of Pavia in 1987.
Mondello began her career as a postdoctoral fellow at Imperial Cancer Research Fund in 1984 and held it for a year. Since 1986 she has been a senior researcher and group leader at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the National Research Council in Pavia.
She has been the editor of the book "Multiple pathways in cancer development".
Mondello is a member of Italian Genetics Association and New York Academy of Sciences.
On October 18, 1986 Chiara Mondello married Luca Ordanini. They have 2 daughters.
