Chihiro Gyokujusai was born in 1887 in Japan. His family name was Murakami.
A disciple of Kanshosai-Itten I, he studied first the art of arranging flowers of the Enshu style.
When Shogun Ieyoshi Tokugawa went to Komaba, a horse-riding field near Edo, he happened to see Chihiro's work and praised it. This incident caused an estrangement between Chihiro and his master. Chihiro later became independent and founded his own school.
